Trump Backs Colombian Runoff Candidate Ahead of Election Contest
In a public statement, Trump praised de la Espriella, popularly known as "El Tigre" ("The Tiger"), describing him as a capable and determined figure focused on promoting Colombia’s national interests.
"The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
According to reports, Colombia's presidential race is heading to a second round after no candidate secured the required majority in the initial vote, based on preliminary results announced by electoral authorities on Sunday.
De la Espriella is scheduled to compete against Ivan Cepeda in the runoff election set for June 21.
Trump also highlighted the candidate’s personal and political record, stating: "Because of his tremendous accomplishments in life, and his political support for me, personally, it is my Honor to give Abelardo my Complete and Total Endorsement."
