Major Fire Breaks Out at Russia Black Sea Refinery After Drone Strike

(MENAFN) A powerful drone strike triggered a large-scale fire at a major oil refinery on Russia's Black Sea coast Tuesday, with local authorities mobilizing more than 160 emergency personnel to battle the blaze.

Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev confirmed that the Tuapse oil refinery was experiencing "another serious emergency," with 164 firefighters and 46 pieces of equipment deployed to the site. Residents living near the facility were being evacuated, and a temporary shelter was established at a nearby school.

"Firefighters are continuously reporting on the situation. The response team will be further expanded soon," Kondratyev added.

The strike is the latest in a sustained campaign of drone attacks against the Tuapse refinery and its adjacent port, both situated along the Black Sea coastline. Last week, regional authorities detected an oil spill traced to an April 16 drone attack. Ukraine's General Staff has publicly claimed responsibility for multiple strikes on the facility, including the April 16 attack and a follow-up strike as recently as Monday.

Russia's Defense Ministry, meanwhile, stated that its air defenses had downed 186 Ukrainian drones across five regions, including Krasnodar, as well as over the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and Crimea — the peninsula Moscow annexed in 2014.
