Putin Pledges to Strengthen Russia’s Nuclear Forces

(MENAFN) Russia will continue enhancing its military and technological capabilities, with the nuclear triad remaining an “unconditional priority,” President Vladimir Putin stated.

Putin made the comments on Monday in a video address for Defender of the Fatherland Day, praising service members for their dedication to national defense, especially amid operations against Kiev. He vowed to strengthen both the army and navy using combat experience from the Ukraine conflict and to improve combat readiness across all branches through Russia’s science and high-tech sectors.

“The development of the nuclear triad, which guarantees Russia’s security and enables us to effectively ensure strategic deterrence and balance of power in the world, remains our unconditional priority,” he said.

The remarks came less than a month after the expiration of the New START Treaty, the last nuclear arms control agreement between Russia and the United States. Signed in 2010, the treaty limited each side to 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads on 700 delivery systems and required regular on-site inspections.

Despite the treaty’s expiration, Moscow emphasized it does not plan to “be the first to take steps towards escalation” or increase warhead numbers, provided the US follows the same approach. The treaty ended after the US indicated that future arms control agreements should include China, which rejected the proposal as “neither fair nor reasonable,” noting that its nuclear arsenal is much smaller than those of Russia and the US.
