Floods Displace Over 2,500 Families in DR Congo
Torrential rainfall over recent days in Maniema province triggered simultaneous overflows of the Congo River and the Ulindi River, forcing mass displacement across the communities of Kasera, Tubila, and Ulindi, according to Jean-Claude Ngoy, who heads civil society operations in Punia territory.
"At least 2,533 households were affected after their homes were submerged by the waters. We are appealing to the provincial and national authorities as well as to humanitarian actors for support," Ngoy told reporters.
Beyond the staggering displacement figures, the disaster carved a wider path of destruction — tearing through schools, health facilities, and clean water infrastructure, Ngoy added.
The crisis may deepen further. A joint assessment team comprising local government officials, civil society representatives, and community leaders has raised alarms over looming food insecurity, after floodwaters swallowed agricultural plantations and fish ponds that displaced residents depend on for survival, Ngoy warned.
No immediate response from provincial or national authorities had been confirmed at the time of reporting.
