Terror Attack in Lviv Kills Police Officer, Injures Twenty-Five

(MENAFN) A 23-year-old female police officer has died and 25 others were injured in what Ukrainian authorities have described as a terrorist attack in the western city of Lviv, as stated by reports.

The National Police of Ukraine said that two homemade explosive devices detonated after officers responded to a reported break-in shortly after midnight on Sunday. The bombs were hidden in waste bins.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that “an individual suspected of carrying out the terrorist attack” has been detained, while Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi identified the suspect as a Ukrainian woman. Police later clarified that the 33-year-old suspect made and planted the explosives under the “instruction” of a Russian special services agent.

The officer killed in the attack has been named as Viktoria Shpylka. “She was only 23 years old and had begun her service at the start of the full-scale invasion of the Kherson region,” police wrote on Telegram.

Authorities reported that the first blast occurred when a police car arrived at the scene of the reported shop break-in in the city centre, and a second explosion went off when another police crew arrived.

Eleven people were hospitalized, including six law enforcement officers in serious condition.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that police and the Security Service of Ukraine detained the suspect, who resides in the northwestern Rivne region. “We are identifying other persons involved in committing this crime,” he added.

The regional prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the “act of terrorism that led to grave consequences.”
