Hundreds of dead seals get discovered on Caspian Sea coast in Dagestan

(MENAFN) More than 320 dead seals were discovered Tuesday along the Caspian Sea coastline between the Sulak and Terek river estuaries in Dagestan, a republic in southwestern Russia, according to reports citing regional authorities.

Officials noted that the number of carcasses could rise as further searches are conducted. The Dagestan Ministry of Natural Resources emphasized that seal deaths are relatively common during the species’ annual migration.

“Scientists believe the main cause is asphyxiation of animals passing through areas of powerful natural gas emissions from the seabed associated with seismic activity,” the ministry explained.
