Germany Explores Process for Afghan Deportations
(MENAFN) Berlin is reportedly negotiating an arrangement to establish a system for returning Afghans to their homeland, according to a tabloid.
German authorities are engaging in direct discussions with the Taliban in Qatar and are planning to dispatch a delegation to Kabul, the media outlet reported.
Germany initially imposed a halt on deportations to Afghanistan in 2021, following the Taliban’s takeover after a swift US withdrawal.
The prohibition was lifted last year, yet deportations have been limited. In late August 2024, Berlin sent 28 Afghans back on a charter flight, followed by 81 on another flight in July 2025, all of whom were convicted criminals, the tabloid reported.
The German government now aims to make deportations “significantly easier, more regular, and more massive,” according to the report.
Plans include transitioning from charter flights to scheduled services.
In early September, a delegation from the German Interior Ministry met Taliban representatives in Qatar, the tabloid has learned.
Officials are also preparing to travel to Kabul for additional discussions, the outlet added.
So far, German authorities have not verified any official communications with the interim Taliban government and have not commented on the report.
